Three employees of Qatar’s Amiri Diwan, the Gulf state’s top government body, were killed in a car crash near the Red Sea city of Sharm El-Sheikh on Saturday evening, Qatar’s embassy in Egypt said.

Two others were injured and are receiving treatment at Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, the embassy added.

The victims were identified as Saud bin Thamer Al Thani, Abdullah Ghanem Al Khayarin, and Hassan Jaber Al Jaber. The injured were named as Abdullah Issa Al Kuwari and Mohammed Abdulaziz Al Buainain.

The embassy said it had immediately begun coordinating with Egyptian authorities and that the bodies of the deceased and the injured would be flown to Doha on Sunday aboard a Qatari aircraft.

In its statement, the embassy extended condolences to the victims’ families and thanked Egyptian authorities for their cooperation, keenness, and follow-up on the incident, as well as for providing the necessary facilitation.

Speeding blamed

Egyptian security sources told Reuters and Al Arabiya that the three who died were employees of the Qatari embassy, not diplomats, and that they were not taking part in the Gaza ceasefire talks being held in Sharm El-Sheikh.

The sources said the accident occurred when a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to overturn while travelling at high speed on the Tunnel Road in the city of El-Tor, about 50 kilometres from Sharm El-Sheikh.

They said the group was travelling in a seven-seat vehicle from Cairo to Sharm El-Sheikh to handle logistical preparations for the Qatari delegation, which is expected to attend the Gaza ceasefire signing ceremony on Monday.

According to the sources, the road where the crash took place is in good condition and built to international standards. Three passengers were injured — one in good condition, one undergoing surgery, and another still under medical examination.

Sharm El-Sheikh summit

Dozens of world leaders and senior officials are converging on Sharm El-Sheikh ahead of Monday’s international summit to finalize a Gaza ceasefire agreement, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and US President Donald Trump.

The high-level meeting follows the signing of the first phase of the US peace plan between Israel and Hamas on Sunday, described as a significant step toward ending the two-year war in Gaza.

Leaders or foreign ministers from the UK, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Qatar, Jordan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Indonesia were invited to attend.

Egyptian officials said the summit, called by El-Sisi, aims to rally wider international backing for Trump's 20-point plan to end the Israeli war on the strip.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the upcoming meeting a “unique historical event,” praising el-Sisi’s “distinguished and pioneering role” in facilitating the breakthrough that led to the accord.

The summit will focus on consolidating the ceasefire framework, coordinating humanitarian access, and setting a roadmap for Gaza’s post-war reconstruction and governance. Egyptian officials described it as “the most consequential diplomatic event since the conflict began.”
