The summit, held at the International Congress Centre in Sharm El-Sheikh, brings together leaders and representatives from 31 countries and international organizations to mark the signing of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and advance efforts toward a lasting political settlement.
It aims to consolidate the truce that ended the war in Gaza and set a framework for reconstruction and governance under the Palestinian Authority (PA) leadership.
Regional and international backing
Upon her arrival, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that “Europe fully supports the peace plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye,” calling the expected finalization of the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement “a historic milestone.” She also welcomed the return of hostages as “a moment of pure joy.”
Von der Leyen said the European Union (EU) stood ready to help with governance reform under the PA, support the Palestinian Donors Group, and contribute to Gaza’s reconstruction.
Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki told Al-Qahera News that he hopeFrad for the “precise implementation” of President Trump’s plan to halt the war, praising Egypt’s role in facilitating aid, rejecting forced displacement, and “profoundly shifting the course of political dialogue.”
Zaki added that recognition of Palestine by nearly 160 countries reflected the international community’s desire to see an independent Palestinian state, expressing hope for “a complete end to the war in Gaza.”
France praises Egypt's role
French President Emmanuel Macron, who also arrived Monday, hailed Egypt’s “pivotal role” in promoting peace and stability in the region. He said France would work with Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and other Arab partners on every stage of the Gaza Peace Plan to ensure the truce holds and to support Gaza’s reconstruction.
“We value Egypt’s role in establishing peace and stability in the region,” Macron told reporters, reiterating France’s support for a two-state solution.
He also called for an international legal framework to oversee post-war stabilization in Gaza, emphasizing that the PA must lead reconstruction and governance efforts.
In a post on X, Macron welcomed the release of hostages as “a moment of joy for their families and a step forward for peace,” thanked the mediators, and said, “Peace is now within reach.”
According to Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS), more than 230 journalists and correspondents from 88 international outlets have been accredited to cover the summit, which officials have described as a “historic step toward peace and stability in the Middle East.”
