'Let the Gaza war be the last war in the Middle East': El-Sisi at Sharm El-Sheikh peace summit

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Monday said the Gaza war should be “the last war in the Middle East,” praising US President Donald Trump for his “wise leadership” in brokering an end to the conflict that he said “has cost humanity so much.”

El-Sisi made the remarks while co-chairing the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit alongside Trump, with participation from 31 countries and international and regional organizations to mark the signing of the agreement to end the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

During his address, El-Sisi thanked Egypt’s partners—the United States, Türkiye, and Qatar—for their “sincere efforts” in reaching the agreement, reaffirming Cairo’s commitment to supporting and monitoring its implementation.

The Egyptian president spoke shortly after signing a historic joint document in Sharm El-Sheikh with Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to officially end the war in Gaza.

El-Sisi said he hoped the agreement would pave the way toward a “political path” leading to a two-state solution; “the only way,” he said, to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples to end the conflict and live in security.

“You have proven that true leadership lies not in waging wars, but in having the ability to end them,” El-Sisi told Trump. “We are confident in your leadership to implement the current agreement and carry out your plan in all its phases.”

During his speech, the president described the current moment as a “historic turning point."

He said the deal represents “a new dawn of hope” that could close a painful chapter in human history and open the door to a new era of peace and stability in the Middle East, offering a better tomorrow for the region’s war-weary nations.

“Today, we welcome courageous, peace-loving leadership whose efforts have helped end conflict and bring security and development not only to our region but to the entire world,” El-Sisi said.

He recalled Egypt’s historic role in launching the Middle East peace process nearly half a century ago, when the late President Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat made his groundbreaking visit to Jerusalem in November 1977; a bold step that “gave future generations a chance for life” and proved that true security cannot be achieved by military power alone.

El-Sisi reaffirmed that peace remains Egypt’s and the Arab and Islamic nations’ strategic choice, stressing that “this choice can only be built on justice and equality in rights.”

From that perspective, he said, the Palestinian people have the same right as all others to self-determination, freedom, and a future free from war; “to live in their own independent state side by side with Israel, in peace, security, and mutual recognition.”

“Peace is not created by governments alone,” he continued, “but built by peoples when they realise that the enemies of yesterday can become the partners of tomorrow.”

Addressing the Israeli people, El-Sisi said: “Let us make this historic moment a new beginning for a life founded on justice and peaceful coexistence. Let us look forward together to a better future for our peoples,” he added.

The president called on them "to extend their hands and jointly work towards achieving a just and lasting peace for all nations of the region.”

El-Sisi highlighted the scenes of joy and relief that swept through Gaza, Israel, and around the world after the announcement of the deal. “These scenes are yet another proof that the common choice of peoples is peace,” he said.

The Egyptian president also commended Trump’s commitment to restoring life in Gaza, emphasising that Egypt, in coordination with the US and international partners, will soon begin laying the joint foundations for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip without delay.

He announced that Egypt will host a conference on early recovery, reconstruction, and development in Gaza, to build upon Trump’s peace plan to end the war in Gaza, with the aim of providing the means for Palestinians to live and to restore hope on their land. “For peace is not complete until a hand extends to rebuild after destruction,” he said.

El-Sisi expressed hope for "a brighter future for our region; one where cities rise on the foundation of hope rather than being buried beneath rubble."

He called the current moment “a unique, perhaps final, opportunity to achieve a Middle East free from all threats to its stability and progress; a Middle East whose peoples enjoy peace, dignity, secure borders, protected rights, and free from terrorism, extremism, and weapons of mass destruction.”

He said that this is the new Middle East that Egypt aspires to realise in cooperation with its regional and international partners.

“Today’s agreement paves the way toward that vision, and it must be consolidated and implemented in all its phases; leading to the implementation of the two-state solution in a manner that ensures our shared vision of fostering joint cooperation among all the peoples of the region, and even integration among all its nations,” El-Sisi said.

Concluding his remarks, the president announced that Egypt will award President Trump the “Order of the Nile" collar, the nation’s highest and most prestigious honours, in recognition of his peace efforts.
