The blast triggered a series of successive explosions felt by residents of Al-Heikstep and nearby areas, the Egyptian Armed Forces spokesperson said.
“We assure citizens that the situation has been brought under control, and a number of technical and precautionary measures are currently being implemented by specialized engineering teams,” the Egyptian Army spokesperson said in the statement.
A technical committee has begun investigating the circumstances of the incident, the spokesperson noted.
Earlier on Monday, residents in several eastern Cairo neighbourhoods -- including Masr El-Gedida, El-Obour City, New Cairo, and the Rehab and Madinaty housing compounds -- reported hearing multiple loud explosions and seeing thick plumes of smoke and dust rising into the sky.
