A senior Hamas official told AFP that the group would hand over the remains of four to six captives later Tuesday night as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal agreed with Israel.

"The Red Cross is on its way to the meeting point in the southern Gaza Strip, where several coffins of deceased hostages will be transferred into their custody," it said in a statement.

Earlier, a senior Hamas official told AFP that the group would hand over the remains of four to six captives later Tuesday night as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal agreed with Israel.

"We informed the mediators that we will hand over four to six bodies of Israeli prisoners tonight," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to discuss the issue.

Another source close to the Hamas negotiating team confirmed the development.

The Israeli military said early on Tuesday that the remains of four deceased captives returned by Hamas have been identified, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised further news on the captives "within hours".

In a statement, the Israeli military named two of the victims as Guy Iluz, an Israeli national, and Bipin Joshi, an agriculture student from Nepal.

An Israeli group campaigning for the release of hostages named the other victims as Yossi Sharabi and Daniel Peretz, an officer in the Israeli army.

On Monday, Hamas handed over the remains of four captives, just hours after releasing the last 20 living captives
