According to local reporters, two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli artillery strike on the al-Shuja’iya neighbourhood in eastern Gaza City.
The Israeli army also detained 15 Palestinians northeast of Rafah, in the southern part of the Strip, according to the SAFA news agency.
Heavy tank fire was reported early Wednesday in the town of Bani Suhaila and the Sheikh Nasser neighbourhood, east of Khan Younis, while Israeli forces also opened fire northwest of Rafah.
In addition, Israeli artillery targeted al-Shuja’iya, and residents reported intense gunfire from Israeli armoured vehicles positioned along the eastern borders of northern Gaza.
The Gaza-based Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) documented 36 Israeli airstrikes, artillery bombardments, and shooting incidents since the ceasefire came into effect at noon on Friday.
The UN Office for Human Rights warned that Israeli forces continue to kill civilians in areas surrounding the redeployment lines in the Gaza Strip, calling for the need to ensure the continuation of the ceasefire and to fully uphold the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas called on mediators on Wednesday to compel Israel to adhere to the ceasefire, after repeated and deliberate breaches by the Israeli occupation army.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the group was following through on all commitments made under the truce, including the handover of the bodies of Israeli soldiers held by the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, its armed wing.
In a statement, Qassem condemned Israel’s “blatant violation” of the agreement after killing civilians in Gaza City’s al-Shuja’iya neighbourhood and in Rafah, in the south of the enclave, on Tuesday.
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the US, went into effect on Friday as the first phase in implementing US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan to end the two-year-old war in Gaza.
On Monday, the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the US signed a document in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh as guarantors for the ceasefire deal.
On Tuesday, President Trump announced the beginning of the second phase, following an initial period that included a cessation of Israeli bombing, a partial Israeli troop withdrawal, and the release of 20 Israeli captives alive in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
However, ongoing Israeli violations of the ceasefire left five Palestinians dead on Tuesday after an Israeli drone strike targeted them while inspecting their homes in the Al-Shuja’iya neighbourhood in Gaza City.
The Israeli army claimed the group had crossed the so-called “yellow line,” marking the limit of its partial withdrawal under the first phase of the truce.
In separate strikes, one Palestinian was killed and several others wounded by Israeli drones north of Rafah and near Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.
Medical sources reported on Tuesday that 44 Palestinians, including 38 whose bodies were recovered from under the rubble, and 29 injured people were brought to hospitals across the Strip in the past 24 hours.
A number of victims remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings and along the streets, as ambulance and civil defence crews are still unable to reach them due to the ongoing Israeli attacks.
The death toll from Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza stands at 67,913, with 170,134 others wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
In another violation of the ceasefire deal, Israel announced on Tuesday that it would keep the Rafah crossing closed and reduce the entry of aid trucks into Gaza, citing what it called delays by Hamas in returning the bodies of dead Israeli captives.
By Tuesday night, Hamas’s military wing had delivered eight bodies of Israeli captives out of 28 killed in Israeli carpet bombing of the strip throughout the war.
Hamas and various international groups say that the process of retrieving and identifying the remains of dead Israeli captives might be a lengthy one due to the sheer amount of rubble to sift through.
