According to the Egyptian cabinet, the restoration was carried out through joint efforts by the Holding Company for Investment and Development, the National Organisation for Urban Harmony, Cairo Governorate, and the Tahya Misr Fund.

Covering more than 12,000 square metres, the renovation transformed one of Cairo’s rare heritage gardens into an open-air museum reflecting the spirit of modern Cairo.

The project included the establishment of recreational areas, children’s playgrounds, pedestrian walkways, and dedicated corners for traditional crafts such as copperwork, handwoven carpets, and khayamiya (tent-making).

Infrastructure upgrades covered sewage, irrigation, and electricity networks, as well as fire and safety systems, while a modern lighting system was added to highlight the garden’s landmarks at night.

All environmental and heritage preservation standards were applied, and the National Archive of Egypt’s rare trees were incorporated into the site.

During the inauguration, Awad said the renovation aligns with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s vision to revive Cairo’s heritage identity and turn the capital into an open-air museum of history and culture.

She stressed that the government views heritage gardens as both environmental sanctuaries and key elements of Egypt’s cultural identity.

“The goal is not merely beautification,” Awad said, “but to transform historical gardens into vibrant attractions that encourage domestic tourism and raise awareness about preserving Egypt’s authentic environment and heritage.”

According to Awad, more than 1,600 new trees suited to the Egyptian climate were planted, while all rare and heritage trees were preserved. Green spaces, walkways, and water features were redesigned to create a harmonious visual landscape combining natural beauty and refined architecture.

The cabinet noted that the Obelisk Garden’s restoration is part of a national plan to upgrade and preserve Egypt’s historic gardens and restore their aesthetic value along the Nile.

The garden, dating back to the early 20th century, is among several heritage sites undergoing development.

In December 2024, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced plans to develop Khedivial Cairo into a modern tourist destination, while the Giza Zoo and Orman Garden have been under renovation since July 2023 as part of an EGP 2.7 billion project set to conclude by the end of this year.
