US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he “would consider allowing [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu to resume military operations if Hamas refuses to abide by the ceasefire,” according to CNN.

Trump told the network that he would weigh the situation “if Hamas refuses to give up its weapons,” suggesting that any future Israeli action would depend on the group’s compliance with the truce.

According to CNN, Trump said Israel was not capable of eliminating Hamas, stating that “If Israel could intervene and crush Hamas, it would.” He added that he had to rein in both the Israeli military and government and had discussed the issue directly with Netanyahu.

The US broadcaster, liberal-leaning and generally supportive of the Democratic Party, reported that Trump called the release of Israeli captives “very important.”

Commenting on the situation in Gaza, Trump said “Hamas is intervening and eliminating violent gangs,” adding that he was examining reports of “Hamas executing innocent Palestinians,” and that “we will find out, and there may be gangs.”
