The White Knights secured their spot in Africa’s secondary continental competition after finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League last season, marking their third consecutive appearance and fifth overall in the tournament.
The two-time Confederation Cup champions fell short last season, exiting in the quarterfinals after a 1-0 home defeat to South African side Stellenbosch following a goalless away draw.
Zamalek enter this season’s competition at the second preliminary round, thanks to a bye earned through their CAF club ranking.
Despite reinforcing their squad with new signings, the Cairo-based team have struggled with inconsistent performances, dropping points that have left them in second place in the league standings amid financial and logistical challenges.
Coach Yannick Ferrera remains optimistic, stating that the club are addressing off-field issues and are capable of a strong league finish. “The team have the quality to secure a top-two position. We’re tackling the challenges, and I’m confident we can finish in the top two and qualify for the Champions League next season,” Ferrera told reporters on Thursday.
Adding to the pressure, Zamalek will be without key attackers Oday Dabbagh, Adam Kaied, and Nasser Mansy, as well as midfielder Mohamed Shahata, all sidelined by injuries.
Meanwhile, Dekedaha are making their debut in the CAF Confederation Cup, having previously competed in the CAF Champions League in 2020, where they were knocked out in the preliminary round.
The return leg will also be played in Cairo on Friday, giving Zamalek a golden opportunity to secure qualification on home soil.
