Egypt's Pyramids FC v Morocco's RSB Berkane (CAF Super Cup)
Congolese striker Fiston Mayele, 31, netted the match-winning goal 15 minutes before the final whistle, helping the Blues avenge their loss to the Moroccan side in the CAF Confederation Cup finals in 2020.
The win marks Pyramids FC's first-ever CAF Super Cup, following their breakthrough CAF Champions League trophy last season, achieved in just their second attempt.
The match started at a high tempo as both sides fought for the prestigious Super Cup.
Mayele came close to giving Pyramids FC an early lead just five minutes in, with a powerful strike from inside the area that grazed the side of the net.
RSB Berkane goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi pulled off a brilliant save in the 10th minute, denying Mayele’s header from Walid El-Karti’s cross inside the box.
Five minutes later, RSB Berkane wasted a great opportunity from a corner, with Mounir Chouiar’s powerful strike narrowly missing the crossbar.
Chouiar’s header moments later also flashed past the left post, keeping the pressure on Pyramids FC's defence.
Pyramids FC goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy made a superb save in the 32nd minute, blocking a strong strike by Paul Bassene from inside the area.
The Egyptian side dominated the remaining minutes of the first half, but RSB Berkane held firm with solid defensive play.
The second half started with the same high intensity, as both teams continued to miss scoring opportunities.
Mayele launched a counterattack but was thwarted by the Moroccan defence.
In the 75th minute, Mayele gave Pyramids FC the lead with a powerful strike from inside the area, capitalizing on a fine assist from Mohamed Chibi, who set him up on the right wing.
RSB Berkane had a chance to equalize soon after, but substitute Youness El Kaabi’s powerful shot from outside the area sailed just over the crossbar.
The Moroccan side pushed hard in the final minutes, but despite six minutes of added injury time, Pyramids FC held firm, with the referee blowing the final whistle to secure the win.
RSB Berkane, one of Africa's most consistent clubs in recent years, won the CAF Confederation Cup for the third time last season after defeating Tanzania's Simba to qualify for the Super Cup.
