Colombia president praises Egypt efforts to end Gaza war

Colombian President Gustavo Petro praised in a meeting with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo on Friday, Egypt's intensive efforts to end the war in Gaza and contain the humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip.

During the meeting, El-Sisi reviewed the outcomes of the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace and the developments in implementing the Gaza agreement.

He further commended Colombia’s initiative to provide humanitarian aid to the Strip, affirming Egypt’s intention to host the International Conference for Early Recovery, Reconstruction, and Development of Gaza in November.

For his part, the Colombian president emphasised the importance of fully implementing the Gaza agreement and accelerating the reconstruction process.

He affirmed Colombia’s readiness to actively participate in efforts to implement the Gaza agreement as well as its keenness to continue providing humanitarian aid to the Strip.

During the meeting, both sides discussed several regional and global crises, stressing the need to resolve them through peaceful means, while respecting state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the protection of peoples’ resources.

Egypt- Colombia ties
 

According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and Petro explored prospects for cooperation in several vital sectors, including trade, new and renewable energy, aviation, and culture, as well as exchanging expertise in combating transnational organised crime and terrorism.

President El-Sisi praised the deep historical ties between both countries, affirming Egypt’s keenness to enhance cooperation across various fields, particularly in the economy and trade.

For his part, President Petro expressed appreciation for the growing bilateral relations between Egypt and Colombia, highlighting the significant growth in trade exchange over the past five years and stressing the importance of building on this momentum to enhance bilateral trade.

He congratulated El-Sisi on the upcoming opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), scheduled for Saturday, praising this cultural landmark as a historic achievement and expressing deep admiration for Egypt’s ancient civilisation.
