The high-profile event coincided with the grand opening ceremony in Egypt, which was attended by world leaders, monarchs, and international dignitaries.
Hosted by Egypt's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ashraf Swelam, the reception drew a distinguished guest list, including senior British government officials, members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, representatives from the Royal Palace, and prominent figures from the cultural, business, and media sectors.
The venue, the British Museum's Egyptian Antiquities Wing, provided a fitting backdrop, allowing attendees to feel the "spirit of Egypt, even thousands of miles from the Nile," in the words of Ambassador Swelam.
He affirmed that the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo marks a defining milestone in Egypt's millennia-old civilisation.
He also emphasised that this monumental project reflects the Egyptian state's deep commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural and human heritage on the global stage. This commitment has drawn widespread international attention.
Moreover, the ambassador stated that the attendees expressed great admiration for the highlights screened from the Cairo ceremony, particularly President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's speech on the museum's role as a bridge between civilisations.
He further revealed that several academic institutions in the UK expressed interest in collaborating with the Grand Egyptian Museum in the fields of research and restoration. At the same time, many travel companies sought coordination to organise trips to visit the new cultural landmarks, underscoring Egypt's strengthened position as a global hub for cultural tourism.
During his remarks, Daniel Antonio, Head of the Egypt and Sudan Department at the British Museum, described the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids as a unique historic event and a living testament to the grandeur of ancient Egyptian civilisation. He also described it as a symbol of the ongoing collaboration between cultural institutions in Egypt and the United Kingdom.
Antonio noted that the British Museum houses one of the world's largest collections of Egyptian antiquities. He stated that he takes pride in partaking of the celebration, held just one hour after the official opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
A live broadcast of the official GEM opening ceremony in Cairo constituted a key part of the programme, offering guests a virtual glimpse of the new museum's monumental scale and architectural grandeur.
The celebration also featured a joint artistic performance, where Egyptian mezzosoprano Hayat Selim accompanied world-renowned British musician Brian Hughes in an iconic performance at the reception.
Popular Egyptian cinema star Ahmed Ezz also attended the event.
Guests also had the opportunity to view a curated exhibition of Egyptian antiquities, underscoring the enduring influence of Egypt's ancient civilisation on world history.
