Sixteen clubs have advanced from the tournament’s second preliminary round to the group stage, and according to the draw that was held in Johannesburg, they were divided into four groups of four teams.
Both Egyptian teams came in Group D alongside stiff opponents, South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs and Zambia’s ZESCO United F.C.
This is a repeated scenario of the last edition of Africa’s secondary club competition, as Zamalek and Masry were also drawn in one group at the group stage.
Both teams were eliminated from the quarter-final last edition.
On 24 October, Zamalek built on their dominant 6-0 first-leg victory over Somalia’s Dekedaha, claiming a narrow 1-0 win in the second leg, to secure a 7-0 aggregate win and reach the group stage.
Meanwhile, Masry booked their place in the same round after beating Libya’s Al Ittihad 2-1 two days later in the second leg of the second preliminary round.
The first leg ended goalless between the two sides.
Zamalek will open their group stage campaign by facing ZESCO United F.C in Cairo on 23 November and then will meet Kaizer Chiefs away in South Africa on 30 November before facing Masry in the third round at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab stadium on 25 January.
The Whites will continue the run by facing Masry again in Alexandria in the fourth round on 1 February, before going out to Zambia to face ZESCO on 8 February, and finally they will host Kaizer Chiefs in Cairo in the final round on 15 February.
On the other side, Masry will be hosting Kaizer Chiefs in their opening game in Suez on 23 November and then will travel to Zambia to face ZESCO on 30 November before facing Zamalek in the third as mentioned.
The Port Said-based club will then play Zamalek again in the fourth before heading to South Africa to play Kaizer Chiefs on 8 February, before facing ZESCO in the final round on 15 February.
