El-Kureimat Road accident Al-Ahram
Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident occurred at one of the road’s sharp bends, where the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off course, overturn, and hit the roadside barrier.
Emergency teams and ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The bodies of the deceased and the injured were taken to Atfih Central Hospital, where the wounded are receiving treatment.
Preparations are underway to hand over the bodies to their families.
Security forces cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue and recovery operations and to maintain traffic flow on the busy desert road linking Upper Egypt with Cairo.
The Public Prosecution has opened an investigation into the crash.
A technical report has been requested to assess the vehicle’s condition and speed, as well as medical reports on the injured passengers.
In August 2025, nine people were killed and at least 44 were injured when a passenger bus crashed into two parked trucks about 70 kilometres past the El-Kureimat toll gates in Atfih.
That crash renewed public concern over the road’s safety standards, given its heavy use by passenger and freight vehicles linking Cairo and Upper Egypt.
Another accident, one of the most tragic, occurred in March 2021, when 20 people were killed and five others were injured after a microbus collided with a truck on the same road.
The crash, which happened amid poor visibility and high speed, drew national attention after rescue efforts were delayed by heavy congestion and the road’s two-way diversion at the time.
A month earlier, 11 people were killed in another fatal collision involving a minibus on the same road, prompting renewed warnings from the General Directorate of Traffic about driver fatigue and speeding on desert routes.
