Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush says Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool could play a key role in the title race, and that facing his Egypt teammate Mohamed Salah on such a stage is a moment of pride for fans back home.

City host the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with both sides looking to gain an early advantage over rivals including Arsenal.

“It’s a very important match,” Marmoush told club media. “They are one of the teams competing for the title, and these are the games you have to win to stay on the right path.”

Liverpool and City have dominated English football over the past eight seasons. Marmoush said victories in head-to-head clashes often prove decisive in tight campaigns.

The fixture will also draw significant attention in Egypt, where supporters will watch two of the national team’s leading players go head-to-head.

“Playing against Salah is a big thing for me,” Marmoush said. “To have two Egyptian players in the Premier League, competing for the title, is special. Of course, I hope Manchester City win.”

Marmoush said that club rivalries have no impact on their relationship within the Egypt national team.

“We keep those things separate with the national team. We joke and keep the atmosphere relaxed, away from football,” he said. “The fans are proud to see both of us on this stage. Salah has already written history, and continues to do so. I feel their pride in both of us.”

“Whoever wins on the day is the one who performed better with his team — because nobody plays alone.”
