Ahly defeated arch-rivals Zamalek 2-0 in the final in the United Arab Emirates, giving Thorup his first title since taking charge last month following a poor start to the season under Spanish coach Jose Riviero.

Under the guidance Danish manager, Ahly have played seven matches in all competitions, winning four and drawing two.

“Beating Zamalek is a great thing for us,” Thorup told the club’s official television channel.

“This title will not be the last one. I told the players before the game: let’s win this title and start writing history today.”

The victory gave Ahly their 16th Super Cup crown and their fifth consecutive triumph in the competition.
