Egypt reach U-17 World Cup last 32 despite 3-0 defeat to England

Egypt’s Under-17 team advanced to the World Cup round of 32 despite a 3-0 defeat by England in their final group-stage match in Qatar on Monday.

The Egyptian team progressed as one of the eight best third-placed teams from the 12 groups.

Under the tournament format, the top two sides in each group qualify automatically, along with the eight highest-ranked third-placed finishers.

Egypt finished third in Group E with four points, three behind leaders Venezuela and two adrift of second-placed England.

Reigan Heskey struck twice for England in the 14th and 56th minutes, while Harrison Miles sealed the win with a goal in the 90th.

Egypt goalkeeper Omar Abdel-Aziz saved a penalty in the 64th minute.

The Egyptians opened their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Haiti before drawing 1-1 with Venezuela on Friday.

The round of 32 kicks off on Friday 14 November.
