Egypt supports Libya’s sovereignty, urges withdrawal of all foreign forces: El-Sisi to Haftar

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Libya’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity, praising the pivotal role of the Libyan National Army, while stressing the need to confront external interference and ensure the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries.

The President’s remarks came during his meeting in Cairo on Monday with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, which was also attended by Major General Hassan Rashad, Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service; Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa, Deputy Commander-in-Chief, and Lieutenant General Khaled Khalifa, Chief of Staff of the Libyan National Army.

According to Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the meeting reaffirmed the depth and distinctiveness of Egyptian-Libyan relations.

For his part, Field Marshal Haftar expressed his appreciation for the key role Egypt and President El-Sisi have played in restoring security and stability in Libya, as well as for Egypt’s continuous support for the Libyan people since the beginning of the crisis.

He affirmed his keenness to continue coordination and exchange views with the President on developments in Libya and the wider region.

El-Shennawy added that El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s support for all initiatives and efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis, particularly those aimed at holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.

He stressed Egypt’s continued commitment to providing all forms of support and assistance to the Libyan Army and national institutions, within the framework of the historic fraternal relations binding the two countries and their peoples.

They also discussed developments related to the demarcation of the joint maritime border between the two countries, agreeing on the importance of continuing cooperation in a manner that serves the interests of both states without causing any harm, in accordance with the rules of international law.

The Spokesman noted that the meeting also discussed regional developments of mutual concern and the challenges facing both countries, especially the situation in Sudan.

The two sides agreed on the importance of intensifying regional and international efforts to reach a peaceful settlement that preserves Sudan’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

They emphasized that Sudan’s stability is closely linked to the national security of both Egypt and Libya.
