Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned of a dangerously escalating situation in the West Bank amid alarming settler violence and ongoing land confiscation, during a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday.

The two discussed the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and international efforts to de-escalate tensions, reinforce the ceasefire in Gaza, and restore calm in the West Bank.

Abdelatty said Israel’s policies in the occupied territories risk expanding the circles of tension, stressing that the international community has an urgent responsibility to intervene to halt violations and prevent further deterioration.

Abdelatty’s warnings come amid rising Israeli military and settler violence across the West Bank, where it has killed at least 1,090 Palestinians and injured over 11,000, and detained 21,000 others since the start of its genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023. The surge in settler attacks also coincides with the Israeli government’s plans to expand settlements.

According to a foreign ministry statement, Abdelatty briefed the UN chief on Egypt’s ongoing efforts to support regional security and stability, particularly by consolidating the ceasefire in Gaza.

He underlined the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and ensuring the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid.

Resolution 2803 endorses the ceasefire in place since October 10—brokered by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the US in Sharm El-Sheikh—and establishes a transitional governance body, the Board of Peace, to oversee administration and reconstruction through 2027. It also authorizes an independent international security mission and outlines steps toward a possible future Palestinian state.

Abdelatty also urged proceeding with the formation of the Palestinian technocratic committee — a central element of the post-war reconstruction and governance plan for Gaza adopted by Arab leaders during the Cairo Summit in March— as a prelude to the return of the Palestinian Authority to the strip.

He also affirmed the categorical rejection of any calls aimed at displacing Palestinians or altering the geographic and demographic character of the Strip.

Furthermore, Egypt’s top diplomat called for increased joint efforts to boost the volume of humanitarian aid entering the strip, aiming to meet the population's daily needs.

He affirmed Egypt's commitment to continued coordination with regional and international partners to support the rights of the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and establish their independent state.

Meanwhile, Minister Abdelatty commended the recent adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution renewing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) mandate for an additional three years, viewing it as a reflection of international confidence in the agency.

He underscored the vital, irreplaceable, and indispensable role played by the agency in supporting Palestinian refugees.
