Egypt aid camps in Gaza sheltering 120,000 displaced Palestinians: Relief committee spox

Egypt has set up 22 relief camps in the Gaza Strip, 16 of which are already operational, housing tens of thousands of Palestinians displaced by Israel’s war, a spokesperson for the Egyptian Committee for Gaza Relief said on Monday.

Mohamed Mansour told Egyptian newspaper Al-Shorouk that the camps are spread across southern, central, and northern Gaza, after initially being established in Khan Younis before expanding northward.

The camps currently shelter about 70,000 displaced families, or roughly 120,000 people who lost their homes, Mansour said. Six additional camps are under preparation after land acquisition and the installation of basic infrastructure, including water wells and electricity.

According to Mansour, the camps provide tents, cooked meals, clothing, blankets, and medical services, with about one million loaves of bread distributed daily. Each camp includes water wells, health clinics, and educational facilities.

He described the camps as enclosed sites with defined boundaries, designated entrances, and security teams drawn from local clans and families. Egyptian and Palestinian flags are displayed at the camps, alongside images of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

Mansour said Egyptian teams were instructed to expand operations in northern Gaza, where Israeli restrictions have obstructed aid delivery and reconstruction efforts in what he described as attempts to force residents to leave.

Several camps are located in Jabalia’s Bayara Halawa area, Gaza City, Tel al-Hawa, and northwest of the al-Maqous Towers. Another camp has been established in the Netzarim area of central Gaza, where Israeli forces previously built military positions that severed northern Gaza from the south.

The camps are part of Egypt’s broader humanitarian operation coordinated through the Egyptian Red Crescent, which has overseen aid deliveries to Gaza since the outbreak of Israel's genocidal war on the strip in October 2023.

Despite Israeli restrictions on aid convoys, Egypt has delivered relief supplies through the Rafah and Karm Abu Salem crossings, supported by 943 humanitarian flights and 617 maritime shipments coordinated with 59 countries and international organizations.

With much of Gaza’s infrastructure destroyed, aid coordinated by Egypt has played a central role in sustaining basic services, as thousands of Palestinians continue to live in makeshift shelters exposed to rain, cold, and shortages of heating and winter clothing.

Since July, Egypt has sent more than 90 aid convoys under its Zad El-Ezza: From Egypt to Gaza initiative, carrying food, fuel, medical supplies, and relief materials into the enclave.
