Egypt's Cabinet Spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsany announced on Monday that electricity prices will not rise at the start of the new year.

The statement comes in response to public concerns about potential tariff increases following the government’s six-month postponement period, which, as reported by officials, is set to end in December.

"The same position remains in effect," El-Homsany said in a telephone interview with Al-Nahar TV. "There will be no price increases at present, as the government aims to maintain the downward trend in inflation."

Egypt last raised electricity tariffs in August 2024.

At that time, households using prepaid metres faced increases of 14-40 percent, commercial users saw hikes of 23.5-46 percent, and industry users had increases of 21.2-31 percent.

The government has previously pledged to gradually phase out energy subsidies as part of an ongoing economic reform programme.

El-Homsany also ruled out any increases in petroleum product prices, following the last rise in October. He added that Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi are committed to maintaining current fuel prices for a full year.
