Pyramids fall

DEFENDERS Leo Pereira and Danilo gave Brazilian club Flamengo a 2-0 victory over Egypt’s Pyramids in Qatar on Saturday to reach the Intercontinental Cup final.

The Rio de Janeiro club will face European champions Paris Saint-Germain for the trophy in Doha on Wednesday after Al-Ahram Weekly went to press.

Both goals were headers from set pieces from either side of the field.

Pereira outjumped the Egyptian defence in the 24th minute to head the ball into the roof of the net.

Danilo ran in at the far post in the 52nd minute and his downward header bounced past goalkeeper Ahmed Al-Shennawi from a tight angle.

The Intercontinental Cup brings together the winners of the six confederations’ Champions League competitions in a condensed format that aims not to overshadow the 32-team Club World Cup, launched this year by FIFA and due to be held every four years.

Flamengo, winners of the Copa Libertadores just two weeks ago, beat Mexico’s Cruz Azul 2-1 in the quarter-finals, dubbed the “Derby of the Americas”, last week.

Pyramids had reached the semi-finals after defeating New Zealand’s Auckland City 3-0 in Cairo and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli 3-1 in Jeddah.

As European champions, PSG qualified directly for the final.

The Egyptian club are the current CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup champions.
