South Africa coach Hugo Broos said his team needed “some luck” in Friday’s 1-0 loss to Egypt in the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage.

Egypt secured the win and a place in the round of 16 thanks to a first-half penalty converted by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

“Egypt were better in the first half and had more scoring chances as they controlled possession,” Broos said after the game.

The Pharaohs dominated the first half but faced pressure in the second, as South Africa took advantage of Mohamed Hany’s dismissal before halftime.

“We fully dominated the game in the second half, but we needed some luck,” the Belgian coach added.

South Africa, who sit second in Group B with three points, are scheduled to face Zimbabwe in the final group stage match to try and secure a spot in the last 16.

“We lost today’s game, but we still have another match and we are motivated to win on Monday against Zimbabwe,” Broos said.
