The trip marks Netanyahu's fifth visit to the US to see Trump this year.

His visit comes as the Trump administration and regional mediators seek to advance to the second phase of the ceasefire in Israel's two-year war on Gaza.

In mid-December, Trump told reporters Netanyahu would likely visit him in Florida during the Christmas holidays.

"He would like to see me. We haven't set it up formally, but he'd like to see me," Trump said before departing for his Mar-a-Lago resort.

Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported on Wednesday that discussions would cover a range of regional issues, including Iran, talks on an Israel-Syria security agreement, the ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon and the next stages of the Gaza deal.

Progress toward the second phase of the October Gaza ceasefire agreement, brokered by Washington and its regional allies, has been slow to date.

The ceasefire remains fragile, with Israel routinely violating the terms and killing at least 406 Palestinians since it took effect on 10 October.

Under the second phase, Israel is to withdraw from areas it occupies in Gaza, an interim authority is to govern the Palestinian territory and an international stabilization force (ISF) is to be deployed.

As part of the deal, Israel and the US have been pushing for Hamas to lay down its weapons - a major sticking point. Hamas has refused to disarm amid Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory, explaining that armed resistance is “a legitimate right guaranteed by international law” for people living under occupation.

On Friday, US news outlet Axios reported that the Trump-Netanyahu meeting was crucial for advancing to the next steps of the deal. Citing White House officials, Axios said the Trump administration wanted to announce the Palestinian technocratic government for Gaza and the ISF as soon as possible.

The report noted that senior Trump officials have grown "increasingly frustrated as Netanyahu has taken steps to undermine the fragile ceasefire and stall the peace process."

Yedioth Ahronoth said the prospect of Iran rebuilding its nuclear program and ballistic missile capabilities was likely to top Netanyahu's agenda.

The Islamic Republic maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and has accused Western powers of using the issue to justify pressure and military threats.
