Egypt and Kuwait on Saturday rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, reaffirming support for Somalia’s unity and warning that the move risks destabilizing the Horn of Africa.

The position was outlined during a phone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Kuwaiti counterpart Abdullah Al-Yahya, who described Israel’s recognition of the self-declared region as a violation of international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.

Both ministers stressed their support for Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and state institutions, and said unilateral actions recognizing breakaway entities threaten regional stability.

The talks also covered Yemen, where Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for the country’s unity and national institutions. He warned of the risks of further escalation and its humanitarian and security consequences, while welcoming regional efforts aimed at de-escalation and restarting a comprehensive political process.

On Gaza, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and push forward the next phase of the agreement, while ensuring the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid and creating the necessary conditions for early recovery and reconstruction. He said Cairo rejects any measures that undermine Palestinian territorial unity or impose new realities on the ground.

The ministers also discussed broader coordination on regional crises, underscoring the importance of respecting state sovereignty amid ongoing conflicts across the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.

Israel announced on Friday that it recognized Somaliland as an independent state, triggering condemnation from Somalia, the African Union, and several regional powers. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognised by the UN or the AU.

Egypt and Kuwait said their positions were consistent with long-standing regional and international opposition to unilateral moves that encourage secession or threaten state integrity.

The call also touched on bilateral ties, with both sides affirming continued cooperation between Egypt and Kuwait, particularly in economic and investment fields, the foreign ministry said.
