The meeting, to be held at the level of permanent representatives, was convened with the backing of Arab member states and will focus on the political and legal implications of Israel’s move, which Somalia and several regional actors have condemned as a violation of its sovereignty.
According to the Arab League, the session aims to reaffirm its rejection of unilateral actions that undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity and to reiterate adherence to international law, as well as relevant Arab League and African Union resolutions.
Arab diplomats are also expected to discuss ways to coordinate a unified Arab response to Israel’s decision and to express solidarity with Somalia and support for its recognized state institutions, the statement said.
Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awari, said earlier that Mogadishu requested the emergency meeting to address what he described as the repercussions of Israel’s recognition of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland.
He said the move threatens Somalia’s sovereignty and risks destabilizing the Horn of Africa, adding that Arab states should take a clear position against any steps encouraging secession or undermining the territorial integrity of states in the region.
