Egypt will play Benin in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations after Benin secured third place in Group D, despite losing 3–0 to Senegal in their final group match on Tuesday.

Benin finished third with three points, qualifying as one of the tournament’s four best third-placed teams, while Senegal topped the group with seven points on goal difference ahead of DR Congo.

Egypt, the winner of Group B, had been waiting for the outcome of Group D to determine their knockout opponent, with Benin confirmed later on Tuesday.

The last-16 match between Egypt and Benin will be played on Monday, 5 January, at 6pm Cairo time at Adrar Stadium.

Benin’s qualification came despite their defeat to Senegal, who secured top spot in the group with seven points, edging DR Congo on goal difference.

Egypt’s projected path to the final now sees the winner of the Egypt–Benin match facing the winner of the match between the Group F leaders, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, or Mozambique, and the runners-up of Group E, Sudan or Burkina Faso, in the quarter-finals.
