The Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, said on Thursday that the country is fighting a “new battle for independence” but that the door to national reconciliation remains open.

Speaking on the 70th anniversary of Sudan’s independence, Al-Burhan expressed confidence in victory in what he described as an “existential battle of dignity.”

He said the Sudanese Armed Forces and allied groups are advancing with determination and enjoy strong popular support.

“We reassure our people across all parts of Sudan that victory is coming, and those who betrayed their country or chased the mirage of covetous states will not prevail,” Al-Burhan was quoted as saying by the state news agency SUNA.

Al-Burhan welcomed all those who sided “with the voice of the nation and justice” to help establish a state based on citizenship.

“We seek to establish a Sudan that accommodates everyone and fulfils the aspirations of the people for freedom, peace, and justice,” he said.

He added that the current battle had united Sudanese people across all regions, including Darfur, Kordofan, the east, the north, and the south.

Al-Burhan said Sudanese would soon come together to celebrate the country's cleansing from “rebellion and traitors” and the restoration of security and stability.

Since April 2023, Sudan’s army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a war that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 12 million, according to the United Nations.

In October, reports emerged of mass atrocities committed by the RSF against civilians after the group seized parts of El-Fasher, drawing regional and international condemnation.
