On Monday, Egypt booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Benin 3–1 in extra time in the Round of 16, in a match played at Adrar Stadium.
The 31-year old Ahly player Trezeguet was forced off during the second half after picking up the injury, raising concerns over his availability for the remainder of the tournament.
Abu El-Ela said that medical examinations confirmed a tear in the ankle ligaments, adding that efforts are under way to prepare the winger for Egypt’s upcoming matches. He did not specify a timetable for the player’s return.
The injury of Trezeguet adds more woes for coach Hossam Hassan as Egypt fullback Mohamed Hamdy has been ruled out of the rest of the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the same game.
Seven-time champions Egypt will face the winner of the quarterfinal qualifier between Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso next Saturday as they continue their bid for an eighth continental title.
