In a statement released on Thursday, the Egyptian foreign ministry praised the move as a "responsible national path" toward reinforcing Lebanese sovereignty.
The statement comes hours after the Lebanese army announced the completion of the first phase of its plan to fully deploy across southern Lebanon and disarm non-state groups, notably Hezbollah. The first phase covered the area between the Litani River and the Israeli border.
Egypt emphasized that establishing full state control over all Lebanese territory is essential for protecting the country’s unity and regional stability.
The Lebanese government had set a year-end 2025 deadline to clear the border region of unauthorized weaponry. This commitment was a cornerstone of the Washington-brokered ceasefire that ended the 2024 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
Egypt further called for the comprehensive and non-selective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as a ceasefire deal reached on 27 November.
Cairo reiterated its firm rejection of any military escalation and demanded a full Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territories to ensure the nation’s territorial integrity.
Despite the 2024 ceasefire deal, Israel still strikes Lebanon almost daily and occupies five strategic hilltop points along the border, the only areas south of the Litani where the military said it has yet to control.
