Egypt’s ambassador to Morocco, Ahmed Nihad Abdel-Latif, has praised Moroccan authorities and fans for their support of the Egyptian national team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Moroccan authorities for their warm reception and support provided to the Egyptian national team, to the Moroccan public for backing our team, and to Egyptian fans for their presence and support during the matches held in Agadir,” Abdel-Latif said.

He added that the Egyptian embassy had worked closely with local authorities since the team’s arrival in Morocco to provide logistical support, including facilitating arrival procedures, arranging accommodation and ensuring security for the delegation.

The ambassador said the embassy also welcomed the Egyptian media delegation accompanying the team to ensure comprehensive coverage of the Pharaohs’ activities during the tournament.

Egypt reached the quarter-finals with strong backing from both Egyptian and Moroccan supporters and will face Ivory Coast later on Saturday.

Abdel-Latif said the embassy coordinated with the Egyptian community and the Sports Coordination Committee to arrange transportation for fans travelling from cities including Rabat and Casablanca to Agadir.

“I met with the fans during their stay to check on their comfort and facilitate their participation in the matches,” he said.

He added that the embassy assisted the team throughout the tournament and helped secure an emergency medical visa for defender Mohamed Hamdy following his injury, allowing him to travel to Germany for surgery.

Egypt fullback Hamdy has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The Pyramids FC defender was stretchered off just before halftime during Egypt’s 3-1 extra-time victory over Benin in the last 16, which secured a place in the quarter-finals.
