Egypt fullback Mohamed Hamdy will travel to Germany on Sunday to undergo surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, Egypt national team officials said.

Ibrahim Hassan, director of Egypt's senior national football team, said the defender will depart Morocco at 6pm Cairo time after the Egyptian Football Association finalizes his travel arrangements.

Hamdy is scheduled to undergo surgery on 15 January to repair the ACL tear in his knee, an injury that will sideline him for an extended period.

Hassan said coordination has been completed between the national team’s medical staff, led by Dr Mohamed Abu El-Ela, and Pyramids FC’s medical team to ensure the procedure is carried out in Germany as planned.

The 29-year-old left-back, a regular for the Egypt national team, sustained the injury while on international duty, dealing a blow to both his club and country ahead of upcoming competitions.

On Saturday, Egypt extended their undefeated streak in the African Cup of Nations as they defeated title holders Côte d'Ivoire 3-2 at Le Grand Stade Agadir, setting up a semi-final showdown with Senegal.
