Counsellor Hisham Badawi the newly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. Ahram.
Badawi secured 521 votes out of 570 cast, defeating opposition candidate Mahmoud Sami al-Imam, who received 49 votes, according to official results announced in parliament.
In brief remarks following the vote, Badawi thanked lawmakers for their support and said his election carried a “national responsibility.” He said he would seek to deal with all MPs “objectively and fairly,” regardless of political affiliation, to enable the chamber to carry out its legislative and oversight roles.
He said the House faces the task of meeting public expectations and completing legislation that prioritizes citizens’ interests. Badawi also said cooperation among MPs was necessary for the functioning of parliament, adding that consultation was a core principle of governance, citing a Quranic verse on mutual consultation.
Badawi said the House would continue the legislative tradition established by previous generations, and that it was required to engage in “serious work” during the coming term.
Born in 1957, Badawi is a law graduate of Cairo University (1980). He previously served as first prosecutor at the Supreme State Security Prosecution, overseeing investigations into high-profile national security cases.
He was appointed assistant minister of justice for anti-corruption affairs in 2015, before becoming head of the Central Auditing Organization in August 2016 by presidential decree, succeeding Hisham Geneina. President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi later renewed his mandate for a second term, which ended in 2024.
