In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the US announcement, made earlier on Wednesday, underscores the dangers of the Muslim Brotherhood and its ideology, which Egypt considers a direct threat to stability and public safety.
Egypt praised the efforts of the US administration under President Donald Trump to combat international terrorism, the statement added.
It stressed that the designation is fully consistent with Egypt’s long-standing position toward the group, which it classifies as a terrorist organization based on its history of violence, extremism, and incitement.
The statement said Egypt and several countries in the region have suffered for decades from the Brotherhood’s activities, which it accused of exploiting religion for political purposes and engaging in acts of violence and terrorism targeting civilians, security forces, and state institutions, in an attempt to undermine national stability.
The foreign ministry noted that the latest US designation also reflects the correctness of the Egyptian state’s policies since the 30 June 2013 revolution, which represented the will of the Egyptian people to preserve the national state and its institutions against attempts by terrorist groups to seize power and impose extremist agendas.
Additionally, the ministry stressed that the sacrifices made by Egypt in confronting terrorism demonstrate the state’s firm commitment to combating extremist ideology and violence in order to protect national security and preserve the country’s capabilities.
Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to continuing efforts to strengthen international cooperation in combating terrorism in all its forms, including confronting extremist ideologies, cutting off terrorist financing, and coordinating with international partners to counter threats posed by terrorist organizations.
The statement concluded by affirming that Egypt will continue to work with regional and international partners to combat terrorism wherever it exists, in defence of Egypt’s security and stability, as well as that of the region and the wider international community.
