The results mark a continued upward trajectory for Egyptian universities in the global ranking, up from 76 institutions in 2022, 78 in 2023, 79 in 2024, and 81 in the July 2024 edition, reflecting what officials described as sustained improvements in digital presence, research impact, and academic visibility.

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour stated that the latest results demonstrate the growing competitiveness of Egyptian universities internationally and align with the national strategy for higher education and scientific research, particularly its focus on international benchmarking and interdisciplinary studies.

Ashour said the ministry would continue supporting scientific research, international publishing, and the development of universities’ digital and information infrastructure in cooperation with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, aiming to strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional and international education hub.

The Webometrics ranking evaluates universities based on their digital presence, scientific impact, research openness, and academic excellence, with increasing emphasis on online visibility and global research engagement as part of broader digital transformation trends.

Among the top 1,000 universities worldwide, Cairo University ranked 405th globally, followed by Alexandria University (517), Ain Shams University (658), Mansoura University (662), Future University in Egypt (667), The American University in Cairo (849), Zagazig University (867), Al-Azhar University (879), Assiut University (899), and Benha University (917).

Several other Egyptian universities ranked between 1,000 and 2,000 globally, including Tanta University, Menoufia University, Kafr El-Sheikh University, Minya University, Suez Canal University, South Valley University, Beni Suef University, Fayoum University, Sohag University, Aswan University, Port Said University, and Damietta University, alongside private and specialised institutions such as the German University in Cairo, the British University in Egypt, and the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology.

Additional institutions, including Zewail City of Science and Technology, Nile University, Galala University, Badr University in Cairo, October University for Modern Sciences and Arts, and New Giza University, were also listed within the broader ranking of the top 5,000 universities worldwide, bringing the total number of Egyptian institutions featured to 83.

Ministry spokesperson Adel Abdel Ghaffar said the Webometrics ranking is a research initiative issued by the Cybermetrics Lab, which is affiliated with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and is published twice a year in January and July.

He added that Egypt’s growing presence in international university rankings reflects the ministry’s efforts to support researchers, promote open-access international publishing, and upgrade universities’ digital platforms, contributing to the global reputation of Egyptian higher education and expanding opportunities for graduates in international labour markets.

The ranking is produced by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group affiliated with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Spain’s largest public research institution.

Webometrics covers nearly 32,000 universities and higher education institutes worldwide and is published twice annually, in January and July.

Webometrics places particular emphasis on universities’ web performance and digital footprint, measuring factors such as the volume and quality of online academic content, citation impact, research openness, and institutional visibility on the internet.

The methodology reflects the growing role of digital transformation and open-access research in global higher education competitiveness.
