In a rematch of last season’s CAF Super Cup encounter, African rising powerhouses Pyramids FC will face Morocco’s RS Berkane in the third round of the CAF Champions League group stage at the Berkane Municipal Stadium on Saturday, with the title holders aim to seize sole possession of top spot in Group A.

Both teams enter the third-round clash level on six points, having won their opening two matches.

Pyramids FC kicked off their title defense with a 3-0 victory over Rivers United of Nigeria, followed by a slim 1-0 win over Zambia’s Power Dynamos. RS Berkane claimed a 3-0 win over Power Dynamos and a narrow 2-1 victory over the Nigerian side.

Under Croatian coach Krunoslav Jurčić, who took the helm in February 2024, Pyramids FC are coming off a historic 2024/2025 season in which they clinched the CAF Champions League, the CAF Super Cup, and the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.

Their impressive run only faltered in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup semi-finals, where they lost 2-0 to Flamengo in Doha in December.

"Playing against Renaissance Berkane will be extremely difficult. They are a strong team with great potential, and they play on their home ground and in front of their supporters," Jurčić told reporters on Friday.

"The team is fully prepared and came to Berkane to play for the win, return with the three points, maintain the top spot in the group, and take a bigger step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals. I always trust the players and they always live up to my expectations, and their goal is always to maintain the club’s position at the top of African competitions," the Croatian tactician added.

The Egyptian side will be without the services of defender Mohamed Hamdy, who is sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during Egypt’s 3-1 win over Benin at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and midfielder Ramadan Sobhi, who was hit with a four-year doping ban.

Despite the absence, Jurčić’s squad remains formidable, spearheaded by Moroccan duo Mohamed Chibi and Walid El-Karti. They are joined by the competition's top scorer Ahmed Atef, Congolese forward Fiston Mayele, and new signing Palestinian midfielder Hamed Hemdan.

RS Berkane are eager to avenge their Super Cup loss but face their own injury crisis, as international goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi who is set to undergo surgery after dislocating his shoulder during training with Morocco’s national team, while midfielder Yassine Labhiri and defender Et-Tayeb Boukhriss are also unavailable through injuries.

"The match will be difficult and intense for both sides, especially since both teams won their first two games, reflecting their high level of readiness and competitive quality," RS Berkane coach Mouin Chaabani said during the pre-match press conference.

"We will seek to make the best possible use of home advantage and the support of the fans to deliver a strong performance and achieve a positive result, with the aim of securing all three points," he concluded.
