TV channel Libya al-Ahrar said people close to him confirmed his death "without revealing the circumstances", while state news agency LANA cited his adviser, Abdallah Othman, as also confirming the death.
According to Othman, four gunmen stormed Seif al-Islam's residence after disabling the surveillance cameras and assassinated him, TV channel Libya al-Ahrar reported.
Marcel Ceccaldi, French lawyer for Saïf al-Islam, later told French medias that his client was assassinated in Zintan, Libya.
Seif al-Islam had long been seen as his father's successor.
In 2021, he announced he would run for president, but those elections were indefinitely postponed.
