According to media reports, the collapse involved a wall separating the archaeological area from the monastery’s farm, rather than the previously mentioned historic wall.

The incident was likely caused by sand movement and other natural factors linked to the area’s geography.

Security forces set up a cordon around the site to protect passersby, and the Public Prosecution immediately launched an investigation to determine the technical causes of the collapse and to examine the safety requirements of the affected wall.

In a statement, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy directed the provision of all necessary assistance to the victims’ families, affirming that the ministry will spare no effort in supporting them.

Morsy extended her sincere condolences to the families and to Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
