In a statement on Thursday, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said it stood in solidarity with Canada following the “painful humanitarian ordeal,” offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing the wounded a speedy recovery.

The reaction came after an 18-year-old carried out a mass shooting on Tuesday at a local school in Tumbler Ridge, killing five students and a teacher. Authorities said the suspect had earlier killed her mother and stepbrother before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The attack ranks among the deadliest school shootings in Canada, where such incidents are relatively rare, and gun laws are generally stricter than in the neighbouring United States.
