Cairo commended the step as a positive and significant step toward de-escalation and strengthening confidence-building measures, paving the way for the restoration of security and stability in eastern DRC.
Egypt affirmed its full support for all regional and global efforts aimed at consolidating the ceasefire, protecting civilians, and safeguarding the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the DRC.
The ministry praised the efforts made by regional and international parties to achieve the signing of the terms of reference, emphasizing the importance of full and sincere implementation of its provisions.
This implementation, the statement said, lays the groundwork for a permanent cessation of hostilities and supporting the path toward national reconciliation and sustainable development.
Egypt renewed its commitment to supporting the efforts of the African Union (AU) and relevant regional mechanisms aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
On Friday, the DRC government said it accepted the principle of a ceasefire involving a strict and immediate freeze of positions in the conflict in the east of the country, without specifying when it would take effect, AFP reported.
The move came after mediator Angola called on the DRC government and the Rwanda-backed M23 armed group to respect a ceasefire starting on 18 February, as part of intensive diplomatic efforts to end the prolonged conflict.
The resource-rich eastern DRC, which borders Rwanda and Burundi, has been targeted by the M23 armed group since the group's resurgence in 2021.
Since 2021, several ceasefires and truces have been signed and subsequently broken, with peace efforts led by Qatar and the US aiming to resolve the crisis.
