Egypt will allow most shops, restaurants, and cafés to stay open until 2am during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr, extending the usual 10pm closing time.

The measure provides an exception to a 2020 regulation that sets closing times during the winter season at 10pm on weekdays and 11pm on weekends.

The extended hours will take effect on Wednesday, 18 February, and run through the end of the Eid holiday, Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad said in a statement on Monday.

Takeaway and delivery services can operate around the clock, while workshops in residential areas must still close by 10pm, except for those located on major roads and at gas stations, according to the statement.

Essential businesses, including grocery stores, supermarkets, bakeries, fruit and vegetable shops, and pharmacies, are exempt from the standard restrictions.

Awad said the decision aims to balance economic activity with public order during the holy month. She directed local authorities to monitor compliance and take legal action against violators.

Demand for food commodities usually increases during Ramadan, which begins Thursday, 19 February, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).
