Following Maghreb prayers after sunset, Dar Al-Ifta confirmed that Wednesday, 18 February, marks the 30 th and last day in Sha’ban, based on the sighting of the crescent moon.

Earlier, Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced that Ramadan will begin on 19 February in Egypt according to astronomical calculations.

In recent years, several Muslim-majority countries have adopted astronomical calculations to determine the start of Islamic lunar months.

However, Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta affirmed that, despite astronomical calculations, the official announcement of the first day of Ramadan 2026 depends on the legitimate moon sighting in accordance with established religious criteria.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri (Islamic) calendar, follows a lunar cycle, with each month beginning upon the sighting of the new moon.

Muslims worldwide revere Ramadan as the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is observed through fasting from dawn to sunset, accompanied by increased prayer, reciting of the Quran, and acts of charity.

In Egypt, Ramadan is marked by special meals, family gatherings, and Iftar invitations shared with loved ones.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Yemen and Palestine announced on Tuesday that Wednesday 18 February, will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
