Ahly will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a FIFA ruling ordering the Egyptian champions to pay $588,000 in compensation to former head coach Jose Riveiro, the club said on Thursday.

The decision, issued by FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber, grants the Spanish coach full compensation, including a three-month penalty clause stipulated in his contract.

Abdullah Shehata, legal adviser to Al Ahly’s football sector, said the club would challenge the ruling once it receives the full reasoning behind the decision.

“Ahly will file an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the ruling issued by the FIFA Players’ Status Chamber in favour of former first-team head coach Jose Riveiro. The decision grants him total compensation of $588,000, including the three-month penalty clause stipulated in the contract,” Shehata told the club’s official website.

He added that the appeal would be submitted within a maximum of three weeks after the club receives the detailed grounds for the ruling.

“The ruling is not final. There are further levels of litigation, and an appeal will be submitted in accordance with the applicable procedures,” Shehata said.

Riveiro left Ahly after just three months in charge, having joined from South Africa’s Orlando Pirates. He was succeeded on an interim basis by Emad El-Nahhas before Danish manager Jess Thorup was appointed as head coach.

During his 94-day tenure, Riveiro oversaw seven matches in the domestic league and the FIFA Club World Cup, securing one win, two defeats, and four draws.

In January, Swedish club AIK announced the appointment of Riveiro as their new head coach on a contract running until December 2028.
