Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty urged his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi and and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi to work for a compromise solution to resolve outstanding issues between Washington and Tehran in nuclear talks to prevent wider conflict in the region.

In separate phone calls, the Egyptian FM was briefed by the two officials on the latest developments in the talks between Washington and Tehran to resolve issues over its nuclear program.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, the Iranian FM and the IAEA chief expressed their appreciation for Cairo’s efforts to reduce escalation and tensions in the region.

They affirmed their keenness to continue coordination and consultation in a manner that contributes to reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Iranian nuclear file and achieving security and stability in the region.

The FMs calls come as Cairo intensifies diplomatic efforts to diffuse tensions between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program and prevent the outbreak of a wider conflict in the region.

They come hours after the US and Iran held their third round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Thursday, mediated by Oman and attended by Araghchi, Grossi, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, to reach a deal to end the standoff between Washington and Tehran.

No deal was reached during the talks but the two sides agreed technical discussions to close gaps would be held on Monday at the IAEA's headquarters in Vienna on Monday.

Egypt has maintained that a diplomatic solution, not a military one, is the only way to resolve the conflict.

To this end, In September 2025, Egypt facilitated an agreement between Iran and the IAEA, aka the Cairo Declaration,  to resume the agency's monitoring of the Iranian nuclear programme in the aftermath of the Israeli/US attacks on the country in June.

In tandem, Cairo continues coordinating with regional partners in support of negotiations that preserve the interests of all sides and contribute to wider regional stability.
