Zamalek moved three points clear at the top of the Egyptian Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Pyramids FC at the Air Defence Stadium on Sunday.

Defender Hossam Abdel-Meguid converted a penalty on the hour mark to seal a precious victory and extend his side’s winning streak to seven games.

The win was Zamalek’s first league victory over Pyramids in four years, with their previous success coming in 2022.

Zamalek now lead the table with 40 points, three ahead of second-placed Pyramids FC.

Ahly, who were held to a 1-1 draw by ZED FC on Saturday, also have 37 points, level with Pyramids, who boast a superior goal difference.

Both sides started strongly. Zamalek midfielder Mohamed Shehata  unleashed a powerful long-range effort in the second minute, only to see it rebound off the crossbar.

Pyramids responded almost immediately, with Mahmoud Abdel-Hafiz firing narrowly wide a minute later, while Walid El-Karti’s fine attempt was blocked by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi in the fourth minute.

In the 17th minute, Zamalek squandered a golden opportunity when striker Nasser Mansi released Brazilian winger Juan Alvina, but his close-range effort was easily collected by Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy.

Pyramids enjoyed spells of possession, yet their attempts were routinely contained by Zamalek’s disciplined defence and goalkeeper.

Seven minutes into the second half, Zamalek’s Ahmed Fatouh capitalized on a misplaced pass from Pyramids defender Mahmoud Marei, but his close-range effort was superbly denied by El-Shennawy.

Another loose pass, this time from defender Ahmed Sami, was intercepted by Nasser Mansi, who won a penalty after a slight touch from El-Shennawy.

Abdel-Meguid calmly converted on the hour, marking his third goal of the season.

Six minutes later, El-Shennawy again came to Pyramids’ rescue, denying Alvina from a swift counter-attack.

Zamalek then dropped deeper to protect their lead, relying on counter-attacks that continued to trouble Pyramids’ back line.

Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic responded with a series of substitutions in an attempt to inject life into his attack, introducing playmaker Nasser Maher, winger Everton Da Silva and striker Marwan Hamdy.

Although Pyramids improved in tempo, they lacked the composure required to break down Zamalek’s resolute defence and were unable to find an equalizer.

Zamalek next face Ittihad of Alexandria on Friday in Cairo, while Pyramids travel to Haras El-Hodoud a day earlier.
