Saudi Arabia condemned on Tuesday an overnight Iranian attack on the US embassy in Riyadh, as Tehran keeps up its retaliation campaign in the Gulf over US and Israeli strikes.

The Saudi foreign ministry, in a statement, expressed "its strongest condemnation and rejection of the heinous attack that targeted the US Embassy building in Riyadh", describing it as "cowardly and unjustified".

"The Kingdom affirms that the repetition of this cowardly and unjustified attack blatantly violates all international norms and laws, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1961 Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations, which grant immunity to diplomatic premises and personnel, even in cases of armed conflict," read the statement.

"The Kingdom emphasizes that the repetition of this flagrant Iranian behaviour, which comes despite the Iranian authorities' knowledge that the Kingdom has affirmed it will not allow its airspace or territory to be used to target Iran, will push the region toward further escalation."

The Kingdom "reiterates its full right to take all necessary measures to protect its security, territorial integrity, citizens, residents, and vital interests, including the option of responding to the aggression."

On Monday, Saudi Arabia's military raised its readiness levels after multiple attacks by Iran, a source close to the army told AFP, while another warned of a possible military response if its oil infrastructure is targeted.

The massive Ras Tanura refinery on Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast went into partial shutdown on Monday after a strike by drones, three days into the Middle East war.

The complex run by the Saudi state oil giant Aramco is home to one of the largest refineries in the entire Middle East and a cornerstone of the kingdom's energy sector. The complex has a capacity of 550,000 barrels per day.
