Saudi Arabia could play their planned friendly against Egypt in Cairo later this month instead of Qatar if regional tensions persist, Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiyah reported.

The two sides were originally scheduled to meet on 26 March in Qatar. However, the Qatar Football Association announced on Sunday the suspension of all activities and the postponement of all tournaments until further notice due to ongoing events in the region.

According to the report, Saudi Arabia’s technical and administrative staff have drawn up alternative plans if the training camp in Doha at the end of March be cancelled.

The Saudi team were due to play two friendlies in Doha — against Egypt on 26 March and Serbia on 30 March.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation said the camp remains scheduled for now, adding that it is monitoring developments in coordination with its Qatari counterpart and the relevant authorities.

Any updates will be announced in due course.

The report added that the Saudi federation has proposed staging the Egypt friendly in Cairo and hosting Serbia in Jeddah as alternative options.

Ticket sales for Egypt’s two friendlies in Qatar — against Spain and Saudi Arabia — began last week, before the latest escalation in the Middle East.
