The first prize in the print journalism category was awarded to Ahmed Maher Abu Al-Nasr from El Watan newspaper for his article on the problem of illegal trade in contaminated cooking oils in Egypt.

The first prize in the online media category was awarded to Salwa Al-Zoghbi from El Watan newspaper for her article on the phenomenon of “climate anxiety,” not only in relation to its impact on women and youth, but also on the creative and innovative ways in which these groups deal with this concern.

The special prize was awarded to Dina Shaaban for her interviews with Egyptian and international representatives from the climate community.

“Journalists play an indispensable role in understanding and explaining the extent of climate change’s impact on people in Egypt and their livelihoods. I would like to commend all of you for your commitment,” the ambassador said.

“You are doing extremely important work, and I encourage you and your news organizations to continue covering these issues in Egypt in an open, critical and constructive manner,” he added.

The embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany has supported these issues since 2020 by highlighting the outstanding work of Egyptian journalists covering environmental topics through the annual Cairo Climate Talks Environmental Journalism Award.

A workshop for professional journalists on “climate storytelling” was also held before the award ceremony.

The three winners, along with many of their colleagues, demonstrated strong commitment to raising awareness by presenting environmental issues in Egyptian media with professionalism and clarity.

The German ambassador also expressed his pleasure at continuing the strong cooperation through discussion events organized by the Cairo Climate Talks with German and Egyptian partners.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century and is therefore a key issue in foreign policy. Germany works globally to make climate policy a central pillar of international relations and to cooperate with its partners in implementing the Paris Climate Agreement. This also includes raising public awareness of the issue.

Since the launch of the Cairo Climate Talks in 2011, the initiative has served as a German-Egyptian platform for exchanging views on current issues related to environmental and climate protection.

As a forum for dialogue between researchers, representatives of government, the private sector, and civil society, the Cairo Climate Talks contribute to raising awareness of environmental issues.
