US dollar slightly drops against EGP by week’s end

The Egyptian pound settled with a slight drop to EGP 50/ $1 at this week’s closing rate, after surpassing the rate for the first time in nine months on Thursday due to geopolitical tensions, according to data from the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) released at the close of business (COB) on Thursday.

The US dollar reached EGP 50.09 for buying and EGP 50.19 for selling on Thursday, falling by around 0.09 percent from EGP 50.13 for buying and EGP 50.23 for selling on Wednesday.

Compared to the beginning of the week, the dollar, which had almost stood at EGP 47.6 for buying and EGP 47.9 for selling, increased by EGP 2.22 (4.6 percent). The increase has been mainly attributed to the US and Israel's war on Iran and the latter's retaliatory attacks across the Middle East, including Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and Qatar.

The highest rate at banks closed at EGP 50.3 for buying and EGP 50.4 for selling on Thursday, falling by EGP 0.15 from Wednesday’s highest rate of EGP 50.15 for buying and EGP 50.25 for selling.

Meanwhile, the dollar stood at other banks, such as the Suez Canal Bank, at EGP 50.25 for buying and EGP 50.35 for selling. HSBC fixed the dollar at EGP 50.11 for buying and EGP 50.35 for selling, while at QNB Bank, the dollar stood at EGP 50.1 for buying and EGP 50.2 for selling.

Other currencies
 

The euro, on the other hand, fell to EGP 58.13 for buying and EGP 58.26 for selling on Thursday, down from Wednesday’s rate of EGP 58.31 and EGP 58.44, respectively. The prices recorded on Wednesday surpassed those recorded the previous Thursday, when the euro stood at EGP 56.5 for buying and EGP 56.6 for selling, respectively.

The British Pound fell to EGP 66.8 for buying and EGP 67.02 for selling, down from EGP 67.04 and EGP 67.19 respectively on Wednesday. Despite the slight decrease, the pound rate remains significantly higher than last week's rates, when it stood at EGP 64.7 for buying and EGP 64.9 for selling.

The Kuwaiti Dinar fell to EGP 163.5 for buying and EGP 163.9 for selling, compared to EGP 163.7 and EGP 164.08 on Wednesday, and up from EGP 156.6 and EGP 157.1 last week.

Rates for the Saudi Riyal and Emirati Dirham remained stable since Wednesday. However, the rates of the Omani Riyal and the Bahraini and Jordanian Dinar fell overnight.
