Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty (L) US President’s Senior Adviser for African, Arab, and Middle Eastern Affairs Massad Boulos (R). Al-Ahram
FM Abdelatty made his remarks during a phone call with Boulos, highlighting the recent US decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization and stressing that Sudan’s national institutions should not be equated with armed militias, which the US said had received support from Iran.
The designation, effective in a week, follows the US decision in January to declare several other Muslim Brotherhood branches, including Egypt’s, as terrorist organizations.
During the call, Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s rejection of any attempts to undermine Sudan’s unity or territorial integrity. He emphasized the importance of supporting Sudan's stability and its national institutions.
The Egyptian foreign ministry said Abdelatty also stressed the need for a humanitarian truce and called for intensified international efforts to support relief operations and facilitate the delivery of aid across Sudan.
Middle East war
Both sides also discussed the escalating conflict in the Middle East, with Abdelatty highlighting the need for coordinated regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and prioritize political and diplomatic solutions to prevent the conflict from spreading further.
The call comes as Egypt continues its efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, where the US and Israel have intensified military operations against Iran in a war that has drawn in global powers, disrupted energy and transport networks, and caused widespread instability.
The call also covered the situation in Libya, with Abdelatty reaffirming Egypt’s position on preserving Libya’s unity and sovereignty, unifying Libyan institutions, and reaching a comprehensive Libyan-Libyan solution that fulfils the aspirations of the Libyan people.
He stressed the importance of advancing the political process in Libya to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously as soon as possible.
African developments
According to the foreign ministry, Abdelatty and Boulos discussed developments in the Horn of Africa, where the Egyptian FM emphasized the importance of preserving Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
He expressed Egypt’s firm rejection of any recognition of “Somaliland,” calling it a violation of international law that undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and regional stability. He also warned of the potential repercussions for security in the Red Sea and the broader Horn of Africa.
They also discussed the developments in the Great Lakes region and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for peace efforts, reconciliation, and sustainable development.
He reiterated Egypt’s backing for all initiatives aimed at consolidating security, stability, and good-neighbourly relations, affirming Egypt’s readiness to cooperate with regional and international partners to ensure the implementation of existing agreements and achieve lasting peace.
Egypt's water security
FM Abdelatty praised US President Donald Trump’s letter to President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his valued efforts to consolidate the foundations of peace and stability.
He stressed that the Nile River is the lifeline of Egypt, where people live under severe water scarcity, and firmly rejected any unilateral measures on the transboundary river.
He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to clear principles and constructive cooperation with Nile Basin countries, in accordance with international law, to achieve mutual interests.
For his part, Boulos praised Egypt’s central role in supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa and advancing political settlements in regional conflicts.
He affirmed Washington’s commitment to continued coordination and consultation with Cairo on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
